Island Vibes & Easy Rides: Do you need a car to get around Skiathos?

Planning your dream holiday to our beautiful island usually comes with one big question: “Do you need a car to get around Skiathos?

The short answer? Not necessarily! Skiathos is one of the easiest Greek islands to explore without being tied to a steering wheel. Whether you want to hop between emerald bays or enjoy a sunset cocktail in town, here is how you can find your rhythm on the island.

The Magic of the Bus
One of the best things about staying with us at Aphrodite Skiathos is our location. We are right on Megali Ammos beach, and Bus Stop No. 5 is just 50 meters from our door!

The island’s bus system is legendary. In the summer, modern, air-conditioned buses run every 10 to 15 minutes. They follow a simple route with 26 stops, taking you from the lively Skiathos Town all the way to the world-famous golden sands of Koukounaries. It’s affordable, reliable, and honestly quite fun—you get to see the sparkling coastline the whole way!

Two-Wheeled Freedom: The Scooter Life
You might notice many of our Mediterranean friends zipping around on colorful scooters. There is a reason they love them so much! Scooters are a fantastic way to feel the summer breeze and—most importantly—they are a dream to park.

While parking a car in Skiathos Town during a busy July evening can be a bit of a puzzle, a scooter fits almost anywhere. Just a little tip: if you have a standard car license (Category B), you can usually rent a 50cc moped. For anything more powerful, like a 125cc scooter, you’ll need a specific motorcycle license. It’s a nimble, stylish way to see the island!

When a Car (or a 4×4) Makes Sense
If you are the type of adventurer who wants to see the “Wild North,” then renting a vehicle for a day or two is a great idea. While the south coast is paved and easy, the northern side of the island is home to rugged trails and hidden gems like the medieval ruins of Kastro or the pine-fringed Mandraki Beach.

For these northern dirt roads, a 4×4 or a small SUV is your best friend. It gives you the freedom to find a beach where yours might be the only footprints in the sand.

The Most Scenic Route: By Sea
Don’t forget that some of the most breathtaking spots, like the famous Lalaria Beach with its white pebbles and stone arch, can only be reached by boat. You can catch a traditional wooden “kaiki” or a water taxi from the Old Port in town. There’s nothing quite like arriving at a beach with the salt spray on your face and the engine cutting out as you glide into turquoise water.

Our Recommendation
Since we are just a short, beautiful walk (about 1.5km) from the town center, many of our guests find they don’t need a car at all. You can spend your days lounging on the beach at your feet, use the bus for easy beach-hopping, and perhaps rent a car for just one day to explore the mountains and monasteries.

Skiathos is all about slowing down and soaking up the sun. No matter how you choose to get around, the island’s beauty will be waiting for you.
